Paramedic/Firefighter also performs various maintenance activities on fire equipment and fire station facilities. Incumbent may be required to fulfill the responsibilities as leader or scene boss in emergency situations requiring the use of sound judgment and decisive actions.Paramedic/Firefighters at the City of Edina also receive longevity pay. The top wage reflected in this posting include a base wage plus longevity pay. Paramedics/firefighters receive an additional $3,000 per year in incentives for education and special operations. Essential Functions•Performs Paramedic and Firefighter services.Responds to emergency and non-emergency situations including fires, medical injuries and illness, hazardous materials spills, technical rescues, auto, train and aircraft extrication, false alarms, flooding and other situations, and takes action as necessary and provided for by Department procedure and practice;Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices;Maintains equipment in a state of readiness and performs maintenance to prolong the useful life of equipment. Maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions and communicates courteously and professionally.Must be able to work as member of two-person team, as well as a larger team taking direction from appropriate crew leader/officer;Participates in special operations or multi-jurisdictional teams as assigned;Represents the City to the community, other agencies and jurisdictions, vendors, and other stakeholders;Participates in community activities such as school and community center programs, smoke detector consultation and blood pressure checks;Communicates with others relating to work assignments and progress of work or to convey information about conditions or work related needs through written and verbal communication;Communications include responsibility for maintaining relationships that are key to the function. Maintains professional competence and stays abreast of trends and innovations.Attends training, conferences and meetings and reviews relevant literature. Performs other duties and activities as assigned. Working Conditions: Work involves frequent calls to emergency situations, with regular exposure to fumes, fire, smoke, extreme weather, dirt and mud. Qualifications.Minimum Qualifications:The job requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and Paramedic certification by date of hire. Must be licensed as a firefighter by the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE) within one year of hire. Must have Firefighter certification on the date of hire. The job requires a valid Minnesota driver's license within 60 days of hire and during tenure as an Edina Fire employee.Desired Qualifications:An Associate's in Applied Science degree in Fire Science or Bachelor's degree in Fire Administration or a related field. Previous experience as paramedic/firefighter, emergency response preferred. Current licensure as a firefighter by the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE). Completion of Firefighter I/II curriculum as approved by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or an equivalent program which conforms to NFPA 1001 and is certified by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and/or Pro Board. Current paramedic certification through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician.Physical Requirements: Employees are required to take appropriate safety precautions, wear protective clothing and equipment, observe and hear commands and see signals for help, climb ladders, balance, kneel, crouch, reach, walk and/or run on uneven surfaces, and drag up to, and in excess of, 150 pounds.This position is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check, medical exams and drug testing. All insurance coverage takes effect the 1st of the month following date of employment. Medical: 9 plans to choose from through Health Partners. All individual plans are fully covered and have leftover money towards other benefits. Family health insurance is also low cost and high quality. Vision: Supplemental Vision plan for glasses and contacts Long & Short-Term Disability: All full-time employees receive Long Term disability at no cost, with an option to purchase short term disability. Retirement: All public employees are required by the State to participate in the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA). 6.5% of the employee's gross wage or salary is matched with a 7.5% contribution from the City. Some Police and Fire employees are mandated to participate in PERA at a rate of 11.8% of their gross wage or salary, matched by 17.70% contribution by the City. 457 Deferred Compensation plans are also available. Supplemental Accident, Critical Illness and Hospital Care plans Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Free and confidential service for all employees and their familiesVacation/Sick Leave/Holidays: Paid vacation is available to all regular full-time employees and begins with accruing 3.08 hours/paycheck (10 days per year). The amount increases as the years of service increase. Sick leave accrues at 3.69 hours/paycheck (12 days per year). Each regular full-time employee is eligible for 13 paid holidays during the year.Part time & Seasonal Employee Benefits: Extended Part-time (30-39 hours/week year-round): Eligible for Health Insurance, 13 paid holidays, Retirement, and Employee Assistance (EAP) program. Employees also accrue Paid Time Off (PTO) at 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
